TERRA DI BARI, THE LAND OF OLIVE TREES
The expanses of olive trees, stippling the red soil and telling
about its thousand-year old story, are the distinguishing
feature of a unique territory: Terra di Bari.
Nowhere else is there such an amazing quantity and quality
of thousand-year old olive trees as in this Mediterranean strip of land.

TERRA DI BARI, A THOUSAND-YEAR OLD TRADITION
Olive trees growing – as well as the extraction of a precious oil –
is a real agricultural, cultural and landscape heritage which was
introduced in Terra di Bari by Phoenicians and Greek. Later,
in the fifth century, Benedictine monks converted enormous
uncultivated expanses into olive orchards, thus starting and spreading the culture of olive oil production.
Some historical texts tell us that, in the thirteenth century, olive oil coming from Bitonto was so appreciated in Venice that 1000 pounds of oil were worth 3 ducats,
instead of 1 ducat, which was the value normally attached to olive oil coming from other places.
